Narita Express Lost and Found – Retrieval & International Shipping

NARITA EXPRESS (N’EX) LOST & FOUND · LOST ITEM RETRIEVAL · PROXY PICKUP · INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING

Left something on the Narita Express and already returned overseas?

If you left a bag, mobile phone, camera or another personal belonging on JR East’s Narita Express (N’EX) between Narita Airport and Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shinagawa, Yokohama or other stops, the item may first be held at a JR East station and later transferred to the police. Japan Luggage Express provides assistance with lost item retrieval, authorized proxy pickup or domestic receipt in Japan, followed by international shipping to your overseas address, subject to the holding office’s procedures and shipping restrictions.

Ask About Narita Express Lost Property Collection & Shipping

Our inquiry form is in English. Please include the travel date, train direction and a description of your lost item.

Discovering that you left something on the Narita Express after leaving Japan raises two immediate questions: Where is the item now, and how can it be sent to me overseas? Finding the correct holding office is especially important because the location can change within a matter of days.

Unlike a forgotten item in an airport terminal or hotel, a lost item on the Narita Express is initially handled through JR East’s railway lost-and-found system. The station where the item is discovered—not simply the direction in which you were travelling—can determine where it is held and which police station may receive it later. Below is a practical guide to locating the item, arranging collection through an authorized representative when necessary, and having recovered property shipped internationally.

1. Narita Express (N’EX) Lost and Found: Who Should You Contact First?

Start with JR East (East Japan Railway Company). The Narita Express is operated by JR East, not by Keisei Electric Railway, which operates the Skyliner. If you left something on an N’EX train, do not assume it is already at Narita International Airport Police Station or Tokyo Station.

JR East records items found on trains and at stations in its lost-property system. An item may not appear immediately after being handed in, so a second inquiry later can be worthwhile. You can contact JR East through its official find chat service or by telephone. The chat accepts inquiries around the clock, with responses generally provided between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Japan time; replies may take longer.

JR East Lost and Found (お忘れ物)

Official website: JR East Lost & Found / find chat

Telephone: 050-2016-1601 (from outside Japan, you may try +81-50-2016-1601)

Telephone hours: 8:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. Japan time; chat inquiries accepted 24 hours, replies generally 9:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m.

If you are still in Japan, you can also report the loss to staff at a JR East station. If you are not sure whether you left the item on the N’EX or in an airport terminal, explain both possibilities when making inquiries: railway lost property and airport-terminal lost property have different procedures.

2. Travelling Toward Narita Airport: Where Is Lost Property Taken?

Suppose you travelled from Tokyo or Shinjuku to Narita Airport, left an item on the train and did not notice until you reached the airport or boarded your flight. If the item is found by staff when the train arrives, it may initially be held at a JR East airport station:

  • Narita Airport Station (成田空港駅): the railway station serving Narita Airport Terminal 1.
  • Airport Terminal 2 Station (空港第2ビル駅): the railway station serving Terminals 2 and 3.

In some cases encountered in practice, an item may remain at the station where it was found for approximately one or two days before being transferred to Narita International Airport Police Station (成田国際空港警察署) or another designated police facility.

Important: this is a possible handling pattern, not a guaranteed one- or two-day rule for every JR East station or every item. JR East states that holding periods vary by station and that unclaimed property is transferred to a designated police office after the applicable period. Always ask JR East to confirm the actual holding location and transfer date.

3. Travelling Toward Tokyo: Lost Property May Be Held at Tokyo Station or Another JR East Office

If you travelled from Narita Airport toward Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shinjuku or Yokohama, your lost item may be discovered and handed in at a different station. For example, an item found at Tokyo Station may be handled by the JR East Tokyo Station Lost and Found Office (東京駅お忘れ物承り所).

JR East lists the Tokyo Station Lost and Found Office near the Nihonbashi Exit on the first floor, with counter hours of 8:30 a.m.–8:00 p.m. Japan time. This is a relevant office when an item has been found at Tokyo Station, but it is not automatically the final destination of every item left on a Tokyo-bound N’EX train.

Items discovered at Shinagawa, Shinjuku, Yokohama or other stations may be held by the relevant station or designated office and may later be transferred to the appropriate police station. Some station-held items may move after a day or two, but the timing and destination vary. The actual discovery and registration records are more reliable than the direction of travel alone.

4. Narita Airport–Bound vs. Tokyo-Bound N’EX: How the Holding Location Can Differ

Where the item is found Possible initial holding place What may happen next
Narita Airport–bound N’EX, found at an airport station JR East Narita Airport Station or Airport Terminal 2 Station May be transferred to Narita International Airport Police Station or another designated office; confirm with JR East.
Tokyo-bound N’EX, found at Tokyo Station JR East Tokyo Station or its Lost and Found Office May later be transferred to the responsible police station; not necessarily held at Tokyo Station indefinitely.
Found at Shinagawa, Shinjuku, Yokohama or another station The station where found or another designated JR East facility Check the item’s actual holding location, collection instructions and transfer schedule.

These are examples rather than fixed routes for all lost property. An N’EX train’s direction is a useful clue, but the station where the item was actually found is usually more important.

5. If Your N’EX Lost Property Has Been Transferred to Narita International Airport Police Station

Once JR East confirms that your item is being held by Narita International Airport Police Station, the return procedure is handled by the police rather than by the railway station. The relevant section is the station’s Accounting Division (会計課, Kaikei-ka), which handles lost property.

Based on Japan Luggage Express’s experience handling items held by this police station, the owner must make at least one telephone call to the Accounting Division, even if an authorized representative will collect the item or the police are asked to send it to a representative’s address within Japan. The police may need to verify ownership and explain the release procedure directly to the owner.

  • Letter of Authorization (委任状): normally required when someone else receives your property, together with a copy of the owner’s passport and any further documents requested by the police.
  • Fax or postal mail: in our experience, the police require the written documents to be sent by fax or post and do not accept these documents by email directly to the police station.
  • Fax forwarding by Japan Luggage Express: after arrangements have been confirmed, you may email the relevant documents to our company and we can forward them to the police station by fax. There is no need to send a passport copy in your initial inquiry.
  • Domestic freight-collect delivery: once the required steps are completed, the police may send the item to an agreed address in Japan using a courier service with the domestic delivery charge payable on receipt (着払い / chakubarai). We can receive it and then arrange international shipping where permitted.

Narita International Airport Police Station (成田国際空港警察署)

Main telephone: 0476-32-0110 (from abroad: +81-476-32-0110). Ask for the Accounting Division regarding lost-property return.

Lost-property return counter: weekdays, 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Japan time (closed for returns on weekends and Japanese public holidays).

The owner-call, fax and domestic-delivery procedures above reflect our handling experience. Confirm the exact requirements with the police for your individual case. If your item is still held by JR East, follow JR East’s procedure instead; the police-specific requirements do not automatically apply.

6. Narita Express Proxy Pickup: Can an Authorized Representative Collect Your Lost Item?

Proxy pickup means having an authorized person collect your recovered item on your behalf. In many cases, an authorized representative may collect lost property from JR East. JR East normally requires the owner’s signed Letter of Authorization and an official identity document for the person collecting the item. The original authorization may be required, so check with the holding station before arranging a visit.

JR East also states that, for certain items and circumstances, domestic courier delivery on a freight-collect basis may be available. This is not guaranteed for every station or item, and the railway’s chat and telephone inquiry center do not accept domestic delivery applications directly. The appropriate arrangements must be confirmed with the station holding the item.

If the station agrees to ship to an authorized recipient within Japan, Japan Luggage Express may receive the parcel on your behalf; this is domestic receipt, not an in-person proxy pickup. If in-person collection is required, we can consider whether proxy pickup by an authorized representative is feasible. In either case, we must first verify the required authorization and whether the item can legally be shipped overseas.

7. Narita Express Lost Item Retrieval, Proxy Pickup and International Shipping

Japan Luggage Express offers lost item retrieval assistance, proxy pickup arrangements and international shipping for property found on Narita Express (N’EX) trains. If you have already left Japan, you do not necessarily need to fly back to recover an item that JR East or the police are holding. Our lost property recovery assistance focuses on confirming where the item is, arranging authorized collection or domestic receipt, and forwarding eligible property overseas. Depending on the circumstances, we can help with the following steps:

  1. Locate the holding office: use your travel date, train direction, seat and item description to help identify or contact the relevant JR East office or police station.
  2. Confirm the release procedure: clarify any authorization, identification, owner telephone call or other documents required.
  3. Arrange domestic receipt or proxy pickup: receive the item from an approved domestic courier shipment, or arrange collection by an authorized representative if in-person pickup is necessary and feasible.
  4. Inspect transport eligibility and packing needs: check the item’s contents and any applicable lithium-battery, dangerous-goods or destination restrictions; pack suitably for international transit.
  5. Arrange international shipment: provide a case-specific estimate and select an available shipping service for the owner’s destination country.

We are an independent Japan-based international shipping company, not affiliated with JR East or the Japanese police. Collection, domestic delivery and export all depend on the holding organization’s permission, the carrier’s acceptance rules and the destination’s import requirements.

Has your lost item been found on the Narita Express, but you are already overseas?

Please tell us which JR East station or police office holds the item, any reference number you were given, what the item is, and your destination city and country. We will review the available collection and shipping arrangements.

8. Information to Prepare Before Inquiring About N’EX Lost Property

The more accurate your travel details are, the easier it is to identify an item in the lost-and-found system. Prepare as much of the following information as you know:

  • Date of travel and approximate departure and arrival times.
  • Train direction: Tokyo/Shinjuku toward Narita Airport, or Narita Airport toward Tokyo/Shinagawa/Shinjuku/Yokohama.
  • Boarding and alighting stations, N’EX train number, carriage number and seat number, if known.
  • Detailed description: type of item, colour, size, brand, model, distinguishing marks and photographs if available.
  • Any reference number, notice or message received from JR East or the police.
  • Your overseas destination city and country, plus an email address for correspondence.

You do not need to send copies of your passport or other sensitive ID documents with your first online inquiry. We can explain whether they are needed after confirming the release procedure with the holding office.

9. What N’EX Lost Property Can Be Shipped Internationally, and How Much Does It Cost?

Ordinary personal belongings such as clothing, bags, glasses and cameras may be suitable for international shipping, subject to inspection of the contents. Mobile phones, laptops and cameras with lithium batteries installed may be shippable through certain services when the applicable conditions are met. We need the device model, battery configuration and destination before confirming acceptance.

Standalone power banks and portable chargers containing rechargeable batteries cannot be shipped through our international shipping service. Perfume, aerosols and flammable products may also be restricted or prohibited.

There is no single fixed price for every recovered item. Charges depend on where the item is held, the domestic courier charge or in-person collection cost, packing, weight, dimensions, shipping method and destination. We provide an individual estimate after reviewing the circumstances.

10. Narita Express Lost and Found: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1. I left something on the Narita Express. Should I contact Narita Airport or JR East first?

If the item was left on an N’EX train, start with JR East’s lost-and-found service. Items lost inside the airport terminals, on an aircraft or on Keisei Skyliner trains are handled by different organizations.

Q2. Does property left on an airport-bound N’EX always go to Narita International Airport Police Station?

No. An item found at an airport station may be held temporarily and later transferred to Narita International Airport Police Station or another designated office. Ask JR East to confirm the actual holding location and transfer record.

Q3. Does everything left on a Tokyo-bound N’EX go to Tokyo Station Lost and Found?

No. Tokyo Station has a JR East Lost and Found Office, but an item may be discovered at another station and later sent to the appropriate police station. The official JR East record is the best guide.

Q4. How long does JR East keep items left on Narita Express trains?

The period varies by station. Some items may move after around one or two days, but there is no uniform one- or two-day guarantee for every station or item. Inquire promptly and ask about transfer dates.

Q5. I am already overseas. Can you arrange lost item retrieval from Narita Express?

Possibly. If JR East or the police have found your item, Japan Luggage Express can review options for domestic receipt or retrieval by an authorized representative, followed by international shipping when permitted. The holding office’s approval and the relevant identification, authorization and carrier requirements still apply.

Q6. Can Japan Luggage Express retrieve my lost item from Narita Express through proxy pickup?

We can review proxy pickup by an authorized representative if the item has been found and the JR East station or police office permits third-party collection. In some cases, domestic courier delivery to our office is a simpler alternative. We can then arrange overseas shipping if the item is eligible. Please provide the holding office, reference number and item description.

Q7. Can JR East ship my recovered N’EX item directly to my country?

JR East’s published lost-property procedures concern local collection or, in certain cases, domestic freight-collect delivery within Japan. For onward overseas delivery, Japan Luggage Express can assess an international shipping arrangement.

Q8. Does a representative need a Letter of Authorization to collect an item from JR East?

Generally, yes. JR East requires an owner-issued Letter of Authorization and official identification for the representative. The holding station can confirm the exact format and whether the original is required.

Q9. Must the owner call Narita International Airport Police Station personally?

Based on our experience with cases handled by that police station, the owner is required to call the Accounting Division at least once, even if a representative collects the item or it is delivered to a representative in Japan. Verify the process with the police.

Q10. Can Narita International Airport Police Station send the item to Japan Luggage Express?

In cases where the police approve the arrangement and the necessary documents are complete, domestic freight-collect delivery to an agreed address in Japan may be possible. We can then assess international shipping.

Q11. Can you ship a phone or camera left on the Narita Express?

A phone or camera with an installed lithium battery may be accepted through certain international services, depending on its model, condition and destination. Contact us with the model details. Standalone power banks are not accepted through our service.

Q12. Can Japan Luggage Express help if my N’EX lost item has not been found yet?

You can send us the travel details and item description, and we can consider whether assistance with the relevant inquiry is possible. We cannot guarantee that an item will be located; our main service is retrieval and international shipping of items that have been found.
