How much does it cost to move personal belongings from Japan to New Zealand by sea?

For unaccompanied personal belongings being shipped as part of an international move, our indicative sea freight charge for the first 1.00 m³ is ¥118,000 to Auckland or ¥128,000 to Christchurch. The minimum chargeable volume is 1.00 m³, even when the shipment is smaller.

Moving to Wellington? Please contact us for an individual sea shipping quotation. A fixed Wellington rate is not listed on this page.

Scope of the rates: These figures are reference rates for ordinary carton-packed personal effects, not a door-to-door quotation. Final charges depend on collection location, cargo volume, available routing, Japanese-side handling arrangements and destination terminal conditions. Please request a quotation to confirm what is included for your address and when you plan to ship.

Sea freight rates: Auckland and Christchurch

The following rates are in Japanese yen (JPY). The additional charge shown applies to each extra 0.10 m³ above the first 1.00 m³. Calculations below use exact 0.10 m³ steps; the official measured volume and billing precision are confirmed when you book.

Auckland

First 1.00 m³¥118,000
Each additional 0.10 m³¥10,000

Christchurch

First 1.00 m³¥128,000

These examples make it easier to estimate an international move consisting of multiple cartons of clothes, books and ordinary household items. Actual charges are based on the final measurements at the cargo facility and the confirmed quotation terms.

How many moving boxes make up one cubic metre?

For a familiar example, consider Japan Post’s Yu-Pack Box (120 size). Its published outside dimensions are approximately 35 × 50.5 × 34.5 cm. For this international freight illustration we round the measurements up to whole centimetres: 35 × 51 × 35 cm.

Volume per box: 35 × 51 × 35 ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.062475 m³. This is a sample cardboard box size, not a Japan Post international shipping rate.

What is included — and what costs extra?

This is a door-to-destination-terminal concept, rather than an all-inclusive delivery service to a residence in New Zealand. The final quotation should specify the Japanese pickup, export customs clearance, Japan-side CFS (Container Freight Station) handling and ocean freight components applicable to your shipment. Rates for collection outside the Tokyo/Yokohama area may differ; please provide your Japanese pickup postcode when asking for a quote.

Allow for New Zealand destination charges

The amounts above exclude charges payable in New Zealand, such as destination-terminal and agent fees, import customs handling or a customs broker, Customs/MPI levies, any MPI inspection, cleaning or treatment, storage if incurred, and transport from the destination terminal to your home. Duties and GST may apply if your goods do not qualify for an exemption.

The rates and service availability also depend on cargo suitability, sailing schedules and the final destination terminal. A port arrival date is not necessarily the date your shipment will be released for collection.

New Zealand customs and biosecurity: important points

1. Customs rules for personal and household effects

New Zealand Customs has separate guidance for personal effects and household effects. Depending on your circumstances and the items you bring, some goods may qualify for a duty/GST concession, but this is not automatic. Eligibility for used household effects can depend on your residence or visa status, prior time outside New Zealand and ownership/use of the goods. Goods sent as gifts, for resale, or for someone else may be treated differently.

2. Prepare a detailed packing list and declarations

A numbered carton-by-carton packing list is important. New Zealand Customs generally requires form NZCS 218 for imported unaccompanied personal/household effects, together with supporting documents as applicable. Check with New Zealand Customs and your appointed clearance agent about the latest forms, immigration documents and declarations required for your shipment.

3. Biosecurity: clean and declare risk items

New Zealand has strict biosecurity controls. Items such as used shoes, outdoor or camping equipment, garden tools, wooden articles and items with soil, seeds or animal/plant materials may require special attention. Clean used items thoroughly before packing and declare anything that could present a biosecurity risk. The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) may inspect, treat, hold or reject goods; related charges and delays can arise.

Important: Customs clearance and MPI biosecurity release are separate matters. Official decisions are made by the New Zealand authorities, not by the shipping company. Contact us before packing items that may be restricted or difficult to import.

Packing and booking guidance

Strong cartons and an accurate inventory

Pack your belongings securely in sturdy cardboard boxes and number each carton. Record a clear description of the contents for customs. If you have a suitcase, plastic container, furniture, unusually heavy boxes or a large item, tell us before booking so we can check whether special packing or separate arrangements are needed.

Collection throughout Japan

Please advise your collection city/postcode and building access conditions. We can review collection options for locations throughout Japan, but pickup charges and availability depend on the origin and quantity of goods. For a firm estimate, include whether there is a lift/elevator and whether the truck can park near the building.

Book ahead if possible

Contact us ideally at least one to two weeks before your preferred pickup date; more notice is welcome. If your departure date is approaching, please tell us so we can confirm the pickup, documents and possible sailing schedule.

Frequently asked questions

How much would it cost to use an international moving company in Japan to ship my personal belongings to New Zealand?

For a shipment of carton-packed unaccompanied personal effects, our indicative sea shipping rates start at ¥118,000 for the first 1.00 m³ to Auckland or ¥128,000 to Christchurch. Additional volume is charged according to the rates shown above. For Wellington, please request an individual quotation. This is a door-to-terminal service, not door-to-door; New Zealand destination charges and any additional shipment-specific costs are not included.

How much does it cost to ship 10 boxes from Japan to Auckland by sea?

If all 10 boxes are the Yu-Pack 120-size example (calculated at 35 × 51 × 35 cm each), the total is about 0.6248 m³. Because the minimum billable volume is 1.00 m³, the indicative Auckland rate is ¥118,000 before destination charges and any shipment-specific adjustments.

What about 15 boxes to Christchurch?

Using the same sample box size, 15 cartons total about 0.9371 m³, still below the 1.00 m³ minimum. The indicative Christchurch rate is therefore ¥128,000, excluding charges in New Zealand and any other separately quoted costs.

How much for approximately 24 boxes?

Twenty-four of the sample cartons total about 1.4994 m³, approximately 1.50 m³. The indicative rates for a 1.50 m³ shipment are ¥168,000 to Auckland and ¥183,000 to Christchurch. Actual billing is based on official measurement and rounding rules.

Can I send only three or five cartons?

You may ask us about a shipment smaller than 1.00 m³, but the minimum sea freight charge is based on 1.00 m³. For very small shipments, air freight or a courier service may be cheaper overall. This article covers sea freight pricing only.

Does the shipping price include delivery to my home in New Zealand?

No. The figures are not door-to-door prices. You will need to arrange import clearance, payment of destination charges and collection from the receiving terminal, or seek a separate local delivery quote.

Will I have to pay import duties or GST when moving to New Zealand?

Possibly. Certain personal or household effects can qualify for concessions, subject to New Zealand Customs rules. Eligibility depends on the goods and your circumstances, and separate levies and biosecurity charges can still apply even if duty/GST relief is available.

Can I ship newly purchased items or goods for resale at these rates?

No. These prices are intended for qualifying unaccompanied personal effects associated with a move from Japan. Merchandise, gifts or general cargo may require different paperwork and a separate quotation.

When will my shipment arrive?

Sea shipping schedules and transit times vary with the route, consolidation, vessel connections and port conditions. Please ask for the current estimated schedule for Auckland or Christchurch. Arrival at port does not automatically mean the goods are available for customs clearance and pickup.
