Shipping by air
Service by air is suitable for small shipments which consists of only small number of packages. Customs clearance is generally less formal and may take less time to custom clear compared with sea shipments. Generally speaking, airfreight is charged by the actual gross weight of a shipment, however, volumetric weight will be applied if a shipment is under certain weight density in accordance with International Air Transport Association's standards. i.e. the volume is also a pricing factor.

Service by sea
Majority of personal goods are transported by ocean. It takes around or over a month to reach destinations in the USA, Canada and Australia and one month and a half to two months to European countries. When shipping by sea, the volume is solely a pricing factor unless the weight per cubic meter is over one ton, which is unlikely when shipping personal goods. One cubic meter is the minimum for sea shipping. One cubic meter of pure water weighs 1 ton.

Door-to-port Service is much cheaper.
When you ship internationally using the services of international moving companies or freight shipping companies, there are two types of services available. One is door-to-port service and the other is door-to-door services. Door-to-port service is the service where international movers in Japan arrange pickup from your door in Japan and consign it to the destination terminal which are located either at the port city or inland city. Since a local customs broker or delivery company at the destination will not be involved at the destination, the charges for door-to-port services are much less expensive than the charges for door-to-door services. Most expats returning to their home countries choose door-to-port services.
